Teamspeak Issues

Channels and sub-Channels isn't ideal but it's a lot better than it used to be. Now you can create Categories and put multiple channels within them, much better than before and more user friendly.

Sound codec degradation with multiple users in Channel is something we'll have to test. I do know we have some control over Codec quality so it may be enough to monkey with that setting to find something that works for everyone.

I'm a little afraid people might end up using Discord as a "forum" as well and will not bother visiting here anymore regularly. On iRacing we already have a few people who would rather post and read as little as possible, and quick Discord text messages might be inviting.

The problem with Discord messages is that you can't link to a single message, meaning old posts get lost, possibly resulting in repeating discussions/questions/attachments.

you can pin messages for easy access and you will get a notification if something new gets pinned

If you all don't mind, give Discord another chance.

If possible I'd love to move away entirely from Teamspeak by Feb 1, 2018.

Thanks.
i vote for it

i've been using discord for a long time now. i've owned a server with me and some friends for a long time now and i've never had any issues with it. my favourite feature is the custom emotes :)

the main reason i don't like teamspeak is that i think it's a little bit too complicated for a communication software. the amount of times i couldn't connect to a server.... mostly servers outside of europe caused problems for me. but maybe that's just me and my dutch internet.

anyway i prefer discord :)

I've read we can get a Bot to autodelete messages older than whatever we set the value to be. In this way you could set it for a period of say 2 weeks and every post older would be autopruned.

Here's an example of a Discord Bot that will autoprune every Channel if so desired (still in Beta): https://maxminded.com/discordbot/

I think this would go a long way toward thwarting the usage of Discord as a forum as there would no longer be a permanent record of anything.

That "Dutch" internet excuse doesn't anymore work when that network happens to be one of the best :)

It was probably a routing thing. Had it happen to myself a couple of times with different servers in and outside europe.

@Duke, you created a perma invite yet to place on the "Comms" page?

Ah i see it's already on there. Also noticed an issue but that should be fixed upon the removal of TS info. Now it says something like Comms 3 info on that page.

Anyone else unable to connect to TS?

Edit: Nevermind, I saw the comments in the Discord lobby. TS will be down for a bit, but Admin is on it!

Just wanted to offer my view for fwiw. I find Teamspeak to be much clearer, and able to pick up just the voice when not using push to talk much better. With discord you tend to hear everything someone is doing including the clacking of gamepads and keyboards, motors of wheels, vaping etc. etc. dogs outside yadda yadda. Stuff you don't get when using teamspeak.

Also, discord looks cluttered to me, but that might just be my older eyes. Teamspeak is laid out clearly and neatly. Discord looks like a mess of hashtags and symbols. Again, fully aware it might just be my more mature eyes. The younger ones seem to love it.

When discord was being pushed it was turning into a shoutbox kind of forum lite. I know you wanted to get more traffic in the forum Duke so I agree with others points here that it may well encourage exactly the opposite. Using a bot to auto wipe older messages over a fortnight means that anything funny or useful or even things you may want to look back on later in time will be lost forever if that is implemented.

My final point is that I too have experienced the loss of quality when a larger number of users are in a channel. Never had that with Teamspeak and it is definitely something to consider before making any kind of jump to discord full time.

I'll go with the majority as always but just thought I should speak up as I see some potential problems with discord.

My bad, was out at sea when it ran out and Ox missed the suspension notice so he couldn't keep us from going down.
I'll change it to a recurring payment.

Thanks Wap for taking care of it, once again ;-)

I desperately want to move to Discord as it's a free option whereas TS is not. The TS Server is generously donated to us by @ElektroVodka and we have to comply with certain restrictions sitewide in order to qualify for the NPL.

Between the two options however I've noticed no difference in background noise as both seem near identical to me. Maybe this is due to iRacing and everyone using noise producing hardware in order to drive, not sure?

Having said that, Discord is utter garbage when more than 4 people are in Channel together and I don't believe is near viable for us at this time.

I think the only way Discord could ever become a viable option is if we were to become a Discord partner.

-I can definitely agree that discord's voice is hit or miss and that TS or Mumble are definitely better options. It auto adjusts the bit rate based on your PC's CPU usage to try and limit the impact it has on your games, unfortunately that often means everyone turns into robots in CPU intensive games. As for the voice activation, maybe its just set too low by default for discord vs teamspeak? I've never run into an issue with it before but every other community I play with typically enforces PTT for voice in games.

-Do you find just the B2O discord cluttered or all discord servers? I've noticed most servers tend to have a bulk of the text channels grouped together and then the voice channels underneath which is probably easier to navigate compared with having everything split by game/topic. Some reorg of channels might help because it does seem a bit cluttered at times.

-Discord shouldn't be detracting or taking away from forum discussion, the content and discussion on both should be different and I feel like having discord can play a role in filling a communication gap. Forums seem to be a more formal communication, sharing/repository of information and discussion of a 'higher quality'. IRC is generally just idle conversation, sure some stuff can be posted for easy access like say setups or EFT maps but for the most part it's just really handy for shooting the shit when you got downtime at work or when you're looking for some peeps to game with. Maybe some moderation or massaging those misusing the service could help. Making forum posts and pinning them in their related channels would definitely help getting those that favor discord onto the forums. The RSS bot definitely helps, it's sent me to the forums a number of times to read some stuff posted here.

Really Discord is just a shiny new version of IRC/Jabber which happens to also include a free voice option.

The NPL should just auto-renew as long as the TS server is running. Most common license issue I know of is that the user account, which is used for running the TS service, doesn't have write access on the license file.
