I am alone here in one that prefers the Windows 8 feel and app styling. I think its the way of the future like it or not. I believe most people are just against change in general. People hated WinMe when it was first introduced and that all versions of windows until Vista are based from(look and feel). Now they accept it and dont want 95 fully back but instead they optimized it to what we know as Win7, which feels more 95 like than vista did.
My wish is that the desktop vanishes all together because it has always been a haven for clutter and disorganization. With screen real-estate cluttered with taskbar items and icons that typically dont need to be there 24-7 and the ways they can be toggled are less than optimal. As of now it makes the experience less than seemless but once gone would make windows 8 feel smoother IMO. Because now it feels like the desktop is an app that launches just so you can launch most programs. So you come away feeling that windows 8 is emulating or something to run most programs.
Basically you have to look at it as the Start Page is the start button and desktop all in one(very user friendly once you try to use it). But I do feel that they have many things that need to be added to make it better(im sure they eventually will). One is a way to make you own tiles, I already can do this with a 3rd party free program(OblyTile) but it should be built in. Also more custimization options right now its very limited in how you can change the look of the start page. Also having multiple windows open at once is less than optimal but I can see that its possible to smooth it out with updates to get it feeling as usefull as the old overlayed way.
I wasnt sold on windows 8 when it launched, I like many felt that it didnt make since to change they way it was because it worked and we were all used to it. Until I installed it, the first few days it felt awkward but after a couple weeks I was sold. I havent moved to 8.1 yet, also I dont know much about why its different. But from what little I have heard I fear they brought the start button back further committing to keeping the desktop and de-evolving the OS.
