iRacing Practice Pals Discussion

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

Sounds good to me, I've got nothing to add at the moment.
Most practices I've joined so far are relatively clean, I only got rear ended once so far, but you do have a lot of cautions insome.

The last one I joined was crazy, with people spinning nearly every round, nothing malicious though. One thing I did notice and didn't like, is that some people park at corners in the grass to watch others race by, which is annoying because they cause you to slow down in case they might be driving back on track.

Would be really cool to have some experienced people around to learn from :)

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

In Practice yesterday this format worked out pretty well don't you guys think? It keeps the racing close pretty much the entire session and really forces you to try new lines and things you wouldn't normally attempt in just a regular Practice Session.

If you guys don't mind, I'd love to stick with this format every time we Practice together and just add to it as we see loopholes that need to be closed.

The one issue I did notice however that is when we get spread out we tend to stay spread out for a couple of laps. I'm not sure what or even if there's a way around this especially if you're trying to break a record time or perhaps race someone else for lead.

Other than that though, this worked out very well.

I didn't mind getting spread out now and then. Sometimes you notice you're being a few tenths under your best laptime and give it a go.
Doesn't mean that it wouldn't be nice for practicing overtaking that the first guy would slow down a bit to give the guy behind a chance to practice an overtaking move (and himself a practice in being overtaken)

I guess it depends on what you want to concentrate on during practice. Trying to keep up with someone slightly faster then you is a challenge as well.

Though I must say creeping up to some unsuspecting racer with a 3 car train seems to be intimidating too, made for good practice.

Still, no matter what we did, I keep improving, just running the laps is already great prfactice by itself, and much mor fun when with a few people in TS (though somtimes it can be fatal for concentration, lmao)

BTW, always feel free to utter any request if you want us to drive closer together or something, I'm usually up for anything during practice :)

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

There has been some interest from a few fellow racers at iRacing in potentially joining us in session.

I've furnished them with links to both this topic and Teamspeak as we should share comms together in session.

I've not heard back from any of the racers who've contacted me initially though so I can't say with any confidence when they'll be joining us. I am hoping we see at least a few of them because they'll get to see rather quickly how much potential lies in this format.

I'm very confident this program is the reason I've won my first top split in Mazda Cup and I've noticed my driving has improved overall as a result.

Last night I actually took the CTS-VR around Lime Rock for a bit and after a rocky start I managed to start turning somewhat decent relatively clean laps. This is something that never happens for me because I have no idea how to drive that bloody beast of a car

Incidentally I thought it worth mentioning that my overall confidence on track has increased dramatically as well.

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

Hey everyone.

I'm also one of the people who's interested in the Practice Pals sessions. I currently run mainly the Mustang series and occasionally some other cars, but for me the reason I'm interested in this format is mostly because of the emphasis on racing as a pack. If everyone is in the same car I don't really mind which car that is (although multi-class practice could be interesting too). I have raced the MX-5 so that shouldn't be a problem but if there is a session that uses the Cadillac for example I'll have to spend some time to get used to it before taking it near other drivers :).

TeamSpeak shouldn't be a problem for me, it seems you can bind a click-to-talk button on your racing wheel so that's fine. I had to re-bind the pit speed limiter button to my keyboard which forces me to move my hand about 20 cm on the rare occasion that I drive the Ford GT, but I'm willing to make these big sacrifices.

What times do these sessions usually run at and for how long? Or is the schedule not set in stone?

Looking forward to trying it out and to meet some friendly drivers.

Edit: I'm Noel Luneburg on iRacing by the way.

You may want to rephrase that because it sounds kinda gay lol.

Anyway, you're really missing out by not racing, it's a complete blast. I would never have thought so in a million years but after a few months of iRacing I can honestly say I'm hooked.

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

Welcome Ralph and Noel, very glad to have you with us.

You'll probably come to notice quite quickly that this is a pretty laxed Community made up of good people from both sides of the pond.

We offer more than just racing should you ever want to get into something else from DayZ to ArmA to BF4, etc., (for example) so please feel free to peruse.

@ Noel, currently we're just covering the Mazda Cup but there's no reason we can't expand in the future if this is indeed as viable a program as I think it to be. As mentioned previously, we've only been using this format for about a month now and all signs point to it being a very beneficial tool.

Should the demand be there I see no reason to expand beyond Mazda Cup, h3ll maybe we can even Practice Ovals one day.

Anyway, the success of Practice Pals will rely on feedback from all here. Should anyone have any feedback, please feel free to share ideas here for discussion.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the track :)

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

Hey guys and welcome!

Most of us here have just joined iRacing during the past one or two months, hence our desire for these practice pals races. Practicing laps on your own in practice is great for learning the tracks and improving on lap time, but we found that the close pack racing is great for practicing close running, overtaking (and being overtaken), accident avoidance and what to do when going into corners 2 or even 3 wide (though the last usually ends in tears). It's the things you wouldn't usually practice with people you don't know that quickly in fear of you might be taking them out by your mistake, but still stuff that needs and is good to practice.
Of course it will also give us opportunity to learn from each others lines, braking points etc, and gives the slower of us to learn from the faster ones.

So far we've mainly been practicing during the euro evenings in the weekends (fri, sat, sun), and other then that just when we find each other on iRacing, usually having 3 people on is already good for practicing some close racing.

Looking forward to see you guys in practice and teamspeak!

btw, if you have no feedbackproblems with teamspeak, it's ok to use voice activation, most of us do, just takes some tweaking :)

Oh btw, will add you both in iRacing, my name: Simon-Jan Portijk

Impressive stats btw Noel, looks like we'll be learning from you mostly heh. Though we should be good overtaking material for you ;)

Personally I have very little talent for racing, so I need to gain any skill by just practicing my butt off, which helps, especially with the help of all my racing buddies :)

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

Nope, we pretty much learn mostly from you NT and how to drive around you when you're on cold tires.

BTW, I still need a flag from wappy. Can you please shake him when you wake up in the morning and ask what it is he wants?

It's kind of hard to get a hold of him during weekdays, but my guess is he wants something like this;

Incidentally, if anyone is Practicing at night in North America please feel free to hit me up as I can usually be found ingame most nights for at least a few hours.

Cool, accepted you as friend. Don't assume I'll be the fastest. Last time I drove the MX-5 was during the Bathurst Road Warrior race and that was not with the fixed setup.

On the note of cold tires, have you guys noticed having actually more grip in corners with cold tires and thus being faster? But then it seems on the straights they reduce your acceleration to make sure the lap is still slower than on warm tires. I've experienced this with multiple cars that run on NTMv5.

Re: iRacing Practice Pals

Well, perhaps see you in a mazda practice then this weekend :)

I did noticeI have had some of my best laptimes lately right after leaving the pitlane, but I'm kind of notorious for having problems with cold tires too, lol.
