Farming Simulator 15

First of all, to all of those unfamiliar with the series and already starting to chuckle at the topic title, do not make the mistake to put this title amongst tunneling simulator, garbagetruck simulator, streetcleaning simulator and other sub-par titles.

Farming simulator truely deserves the simulator title, and already proved so in the past. Farming simulator 2013 sold over 2 million copies in the past, and has done so because of it's rather extensive simulation of agricultural life, or better said, work.

And working is exactly what you'll be doing in this game, you'll sow and reap crops, mow grass, feed livestock and process, sell your proceedings, and more. And not in a shallow way. The game is rather in depth, where you can store harvests, sell harvests directly, to several buyers, with dynamic prices, or use them for further processing into fodder, or preparing it for biogas instalation, or use it for replanting.

To do all this you'll have over 100 pieces of equipment available.

First of all a wide array of vehicles, including; tractors, harvesters, loaders, transports, mowers, self propelled sprayers, self propelled feeders and more.

And then you'll have a world of attachments to use to, including; tippers, trailers, potato harvesters, beet harvesters, cultivators, plows, sowing machines, fertilizer spreaders, sprayers, manure spreaders, slurry tanks, mowers, windrowers, tedders, loading wagons, balers, bale transporters, feeding technology equipment (mixers), and a plurality of small attachments like weights, water and fuel tanks, header trailer and all sorts of shovels, forks, grips and cutterheads.

The game is played on a large open world map, complete with villages and several agricultural and other companies where you can sell your proceedings. As you make money you'll be saving up for buying additional equipment and more fields and animals. You'll have a full day and night cycle and weather influencing your activities and AI traffic on the roads to take into account. There also is a solid multiplayer mode, so your friends can help you out on your farm.

So what's new in Farming Simulator 2015?

This time around the new installment has received some noticable updates that are really worth mentioning;

  • A new game engine: And I must admit, this was about time as the old one wasn't the best optimized game engine ever. "The game engine in Farming Simulator 15 has been totally revamped, and the game can now display visual effects and graphic rendering that are way ahead of the previous version, in particular using PBR (physical-based rendering) that for example, provides a photo-realistic rendering of the vehicles."
  • Better physics: Where in FS2013 bale handling was much like trying to stack large ice cubes on the moon, the physics in the game should now be noticably better. Well I'm ready to test this out myself!
  • Dirt: This time around your vehicles and attachments will get dirty, and you'll have a high pressure cleaner available to manually clean them, if you want to.
  • More players in MP: this time you'll be able to have 16 players in a multiplayer game
  • Additional functionality on vehicles: these include (partly) working dasboard instruments (speed and fuel), indicators. I'm hoping for working mirrors too, and appearantly the modding tools already available show good hope for that.
  • Of course a bunch of new vehicles and equipment: including 20 additional licensed brands, a pick up truck, an MAN truck for hauling specialized trailers and more.
  • LOGGING!: Yep that deserves some capital letters. Logging has been added, and wow, it looks good. You can now cut trees with a harvester, or do it manually with a chainsaw and then either sell the logs, or shred them to wood chips.

New vid just came out, and it shows some nice stuff that I didn't know about yet, like replantable trees, working mirrors, and using a flatbed for getting your newly bouhgt stuff from the shop :) Good stuff, only one more week till I can go play this myself !

I might have to try this! Do you happen to know if this forces you to be online always (always online DRM) and is LAN play available?

Shilka almost talked me into this on Twitch...

Looking forward to watching the twitch stream.

I'm curious to find out how the multiplayer side of it works. Like do we all work on one persistant farm/map etc. or are we limited to the host and can only play when the host is online?

EDIT: I wonder how long it will take to mod the pressure washer into a flamethrower and have a deathmatch? :D

Farming sim 2013 didn't have always online, so I'm assuming the same goes for FS 15. Information is scarce though, so no official word on this. I can let you know first hand in a week though :)

If, - and again basing this on the 2013 version -, it works the same, then basicly you can decide to host your singleplayergame in progress, or a new save, as a multiplayer game at any moment. As long as you save it after a session you can get to work on it another time again, but yeah, it's one player hosting it and saving it on his side. So basicly you can decide to work on your saves in single or multiplayer, or join someone elses game.

So it's persistant in the sense that the host saves the game and can host it again later to continue work, or he could do some work on it in SP in between hosting sessions too. Or you could host your SP save in MP to have us help you out on one day, and someone else could host his save so you can help him the other day for example.

There's no dedicated, unless ofcourse someone lets a pc with the game running 24/7.

Again, all this info is from the previous installment, I can not be sure if FS 15 will work the same way. There's only some scarse info from the official site, and the stuff you can see in the videos. No other info from devs in interviews, forums or anything, so it's just a few lines of info, some vids and past experience we have to go by for now...

It says on steam:
  • Additional Notes: INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED FOR THE ONLINE GAME

I'm wondering... uh... isn't that obvious? Or are they trying to say its like Sim City when that debacle released and you CAN'T play unless you have a constant internet connection for no reason.

I can see my fiance and I playing this together. I was good with crops in minecraft :icon_cheesygrin:

You mean when you see something tall and green and you wildly start clicking around you and all sorts of harvest falls on the ground?
Just kidding, I know it is more in depth than that. Do you know of the mod TerraFirmaCraft? Apparently that has really detailed farming among other things.

haha. It was tough hacking away at those plants when they reached their final growth sprite.

I know of that mod. Never used it I don't think. Modded minecraft was a must for me though. I played industrial craft 2 (religiously) among a few others. IC2 featured a complex crop system but I never delved into it too much.

It involved cross breeding crops of different tiers to eventually reach iron-yielding wheat, redstone wheat, even some strange gold plants. But it was very very complex. You had to do it in the correct lighting conditions (depending on the plant) the correct world height, and some plants required other things like redwheat needed to be in a cave lit only by redstone torches.

I think they might mean that there is no LAN multiplayer with that statement or something...

Looks interesting. Might make a good "fatass couch laptop game", although I may need a new one as this is starting to really show it's age.

I bought it from steam, sadly.....

Giants released it a couple of hours ago for people who bought it on their website.

Well, it saved you €3 for being that couple of hours later, I guess it's the 30th earlier in Germany then in the US west coast. Steam is for getting stuff cheaper, not earlier :p
In my personal experience, if you want to get stuff early, go to your local toy shop that happens to sell games too and will unpack that box of hardcopies and put it on the shelves 3 days early because they have no sense for release dates at all XD I've already been watching livestreams of the game for the past 3 days ;)
